This Day in History

30 Sep

September 27, 1915 – Harry Minto, son of pioneer John Minto and Warden of the Oregon State Penitentiary, was shot and killed by Otto Hooker, an escaped convict. Minto had found and challenged Hooker in Albany, and the next day, Hooker was shot and mortally wounded by Patrolman A. J. Long of Portland. Long fired just as Hooker was pulling his gun.

September 1917 – The Salem City Council formally accepted the deed to Bush Pasture as a gift. They agreed that the property would remain exactly as it was during the lifetime of Miss Sally Bush.

September 1916 – Willamette University faculty imposed strict rules on student conduct. Students were required to attend daily chapel in Waller Hall, and any student using intoxicants or tobacco were to sever their relationship with the university. Students were also forbidden to hold dances and were advised not to dance anywhere.

September 1890 – Considerable complaints had circulated Salem regarding steam traction engines chuffling through the streets. These engines were known to scare horses and thereby endanger human life.

September 1913 – The Steelhammer family left Woodburn with their two children. Over a particularly bad strech of road, John Jr. was thrown out of the car. The family noticed four miles down the road and immediately turned the car around to speed back toward Woodburn. After three miles, they find the boy running toward the car, laughing and uninjured.
